2. The Man Who Ruled Meerut

The house was already awake before I was.

By the time I walked downstairs, servants were moving quietly through the halls, polishing furniture that didnโ€™t need polishing and arranging flowers no one ever noticed. They always seemed to hear me before they saw me because every conversation died the moment I entered a room. Footsteps slowed. Eyes lowered. Iโ€™d gotten used to it years ago. Fear had a strange way of making people disciplined.
